I can’t believe Kevin and I have been married a year. Actually, I can. Kevin and I met over 10 years ago, so being married for a year really isn’t huge. When we make it to 10 years married, that will be a big deal. Granted, there are some things that I have learned in the last year, both about Kevin and about our relationship that were new. For the most part though, this year wasn’t terribly different than the first year we lived together here in Canada. Kevin played a bit (ok, a LOT) more golf and I took more photos than the year before. We bought a new bed, a new dog and a new car – all of which make me feel more domesticated and I cooked a lot of new recipes. We both procrastinated about what we wanted to do for our first anniversary, but we finally decided to head down to Portland to drink some microbrews (I think we visited 5 in three days), do some tax free shopping, and eat some seriously good food. In classic procrastination mode we didn’t decide where we wanted to eat our “anniversary dinner” until the night before and by the time we thought to make a reservation they were all booked up, but we still got in (we only had to wait 20 min) and I can say Le Pigeon is one of the absolute best restaurants I have ever eaten at.
I made Kevin watch “Put a Bird on it,” the first night in Portland and the running joke was that just about everywhere we went, sure enough, there was a bird on it. Here are a few photos from the trip. Some I took and some Kevin took (I am also waiting for a role of film to get developed, so look for the “film follow up”).
Welcome to America! This is the first thing you see.
Kevin is excited about deep dish pizza! Kylies was a great late night dinner option in Seattle.
Last time we were in Portland we were told to check out Mother’s and it was amazing, so of course we had to go back!

There were birds everywhere, even in empty store windows.

Drinking beer at Henry’s makes you sleepy.
Tasters from Migration Brewing.
Yes, even the dogs in Portland can have a hipter stache.
Ok, maybe not the best doughnut ever (still pretty good though), but certainly the only place (I know of) that has bacon on a doughnut.

We checked out the Japanese Gardens, which were lovely.

More beer at Rogue.
And if you are a REALLY posh store (such as Oblation in the Pearl District) you not only have birds on stuff in your store you have a real bird in the store!
Le Pigeon figured one bird isn’t enough, so two must be better.
Yeah for anniversaries!
